UI Proudly to Announce 1st & 3rd Place for Ocean Schlumberger Petrel Plug-in Competition

Geophysical Team, Physics Department, Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Sciences UI succeeded in taking away 2 positions at a time, 1^st place and 3^rd place in prestigious competence in commercial software development in oil and gas industry. This final competition includes 10 teams from 5 top universities in Indonesia which has a geosciences major in the university like UI, ITB, UGM, UPN and Trisakti. They are competing against each other for a prize of 10.000 USD. The prize was given at Schlumberger witnessed by Vice Chancellor UI Mr.  Sunardji, SE, MM.

2 teams from UI under supervisor of Dr. rer. nat Abdul Haris (reservoir Geophysics Lecturer, Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Sciences UI) presented 2 projects called “CBM Modeling for Estimating Methane Gas Reserve”  and “ Spectral Decomposition for Direct Hydrocarbon Indicator”. These 2 projects from UI could attract attention away from the judges which is a combination from experts of oil and gas industry like Chevron, Pertamina, Medco and Sclumberger itself brought in 3 direct experts from Houston, USA. This competition is a breakthrough in creating a synergy between college to build and develop oil and gas technology in Indonesia especially and in international scale in general.

2 softwares developed by UI team can give a new innovation in CBM exploration and detecting hydrocarbon content which can be either oil or gas trapped under earth’s surface, as mentioned by Dr. rer. nat abdul Haris as a team supervisor which has been supervising the 2 teams’ preparation for almost 3 months. These 2 teams from UI is a combination of Geophysics student, Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Sciences UI and also Computer Science faculty UI.
