This talk will provide students with an outline of life as a geophysicist working for an international Oil and Gas Company in Indonesia and a summary of the business drivers for geophysical work. Included will be some examples of day to day technical geophysics tasks and challenges including depth conversion, seismic imaging, reservoir characterization in clastic and fractured basement environments. There will be a discussion of the benefits of seismic data and its inherent limitations and uncertainties. The contrasting challenges of wild cat exploration work and development geophysics will also be discussed together with how oil company geophysicists interact with service companies and government departments. The importance of the geological characterization of the subsurface will be emphasized. The format will be relaxed, and attendees are encouraged to ask questions!
