The main purpose of geoscientists working in and oil and gas companies are to determine and develop a possible area that is possible to become a reservoir where oil, gas, or oil and gas are accumulated. This process of determining a reservoir consists of three parts, they are data acquisition, processing data, and last but not least is interpretation of the data. These steps are done by geoscientists working together based on knowledge that they have from different points of view and then combining them together to get a well made and detailed interpretation of the reservoir. For example, a geologist understands facies analysis, seismic stratigraphy, structural analysis, and many other. And on the other hand, a geophysicist understands wave propagation analysis, seismic attribute analysis, geostatistic, numerical analysis for quantitative interpretation, etc. When oil or gas is found, it is then developed and processed by experts so it is usable for daily needs of energy.
On this workshop, we are specifically focusing on the interpretation of seismic. To get a good result of interpretation and create a subsurface image from it, it needs more than just seismic data that has been processed. It also needs other back up data’s such as well log and not forgetting the geological features in the area and beneath it so the result will be more accurate because it is supported by many data’s that can be as precise as the real condition. In the stage of interpretation there is what is called well tie seismic data. Where we estimate the horizons of the subsurface from the seismic data and tie them to well log data that is filled with physical properties.
Besides that we are hoping by doing this workshop, the participants will have a chance to do the interpretation by not only until well seismic tie, but continue until making a time structure map on software Geographix. As we know, seismic data is still based on time domain, which is why we will try to make a map based on time domain to make an image of how the reservoir looks like. And we can also make an interpretation of the horizons that are contained in it. Even though there are still many steps above after making time structure map in interpretation in a workshop of a period of a couple of hours, it is already a big step in studying and trying to understand of how to apply the knowledge that we know and develop it. Adding to it, we can discuss the things that we are lack of in understanding to the instructor who is an expert in his work.
Interpretation does not mean that we will result the image or modeling of the reservoir as the real condition of the field, but it’s trying to make the most precise based on the theories and knowledge that the geoscientists have. It is very subjective, every people will have different interpretation which they make based on logical reasons and explanation. That is why to become expert geoscientists; they have to master geology, geophysics, and geochemistry in order to develop a mindset of integrating his or her analysis on the subsurface interpretation.
That is why it is important for students to keep practice their way of thinking and create a mindset of how to do interpretation, know on what are the parameters that have to be noticed and studied. It is hoped by doing lots of practice and studying, the students will have enough knowledge and experience for when after graduating and applying to work in the oil and gas industry.
