AN INTEGRATED GEOLOGICAL LECTURE OF CARBONATE RESERVOIR

University of Indonesia – Student Chapter of American Association of Petroleum Geologists recently held the workshop activity entitled by “An Integrated Geological Lecture of Carbonate Reservoir” on Saturday, 31th July 2010 and 18th September 2010. This workshop was taught by Mr. Ngakan Alit Ascaria (Premier-Oil Indonesia) and Mr. Awang Harun Satyana (BP Migas). In this event, Mr. Ngakan Alit Ascaria became our instructor on 31th July 2010 and Mr. Awang Harun Satyana became our instructor on 18th September 2010. Mr. Ngakan Alit Ascaria gave us a lot of knowledge about carbonate reservoir and Mr. Awang Harun Satyana gave us a lot of knowledge about petroleum system of carbonate plays.
This workshop activity was held at Department of Physics, FMIPA University of Indonesia, Depok. There were 51 participants who joined this event. This event started from at 10.00 am until 4.30 pm on 31th July 2010 and divided into 3 sections (attending presentation, asking some questions and encouraged to do the exercises). At 18th September 2010, this event started from at 11.00 am until 04.30 pm and divided into 2 sections (attending presentation and asking some questions).
CARBONATE RESERVOIR (31th JULY 2010)
The workshop Carbonate Reservoir was taught by Mr. Ngakan Alit Ascaria. This workshop divided into 3 sections. First section, Mr. Ngakan Alit Ascaria giving short presentation about introduction of carbonate, three phase of working with carbonate and carbonate plays.
He presented introduction of carbonate about problem with carbonate reservoir. Problem with carbonate reservoir such as heterogeneous porosity, permeability complex and depositional diagenetic environments overprints. The problem of heterogeneous porosity and permeability complex in carbonate reservoir can be solved by studying concept of total rock and learn from the carbonate facies. Carbonate facies helps to understand porosity connectivity and permeability barrier. In carbonate reservoir, diagenetic is so important, because this process either can enhance porosity or reduce it. Depositional diagenetic environments and platform morphology help us to determine reservoir distribution and where to locate the next well.
After introduction of carbonate, he explained about three phase of working with carbonate and carbonate plays. Three phase of working with carbonate include data gathering, interpretation and prediction. He gave conclusion that for integrated well data which have been described with seismic and run seismic modeling to help determine the heterogeneous of reservoir laterally. Furthermore, he concluded that if these methods applied properly will reduce risk and have a chance of success in carbonate plays. Carbonate plays are consist basin type, basin fill history, antecedent topography, time and type of carbonate factory/architecture, time of porosity development, time of hydrocarbon migration and preservation. Finally discussion about had begun.
At second section, the atmospheres change from presentation to discussion. The participants are asking some of question to Mr. Ngakan Alit Ascaria. Some questions are consists diagenetic and interpretation in carbonate reservoir and carbonate plays.
Finally, this time at the third section, all participants were challenged to do some exercises and from Mr. Ngakan Alit Ascaria. There are exercises separated from basic concept of carbonate reservoir. The exercises are depositional environment and platform morphology for reservoir distribution and reduce risk for tight area. After we have been worked with exercises, Mr. Ngakan Alit Ascaria explained about answer of exercises.
PETROLEUM SYSTEM OF CARBONATE PLAYS (18th SEPTEMBER 2010)
The workshop Petroleum System of Carbonate Plays was taught by Mr. Awang Harun Satyana. This workshop divided into 2 sections. First section, Mr. Awang Harun Satyana giving short presentation about petroleum system in general, carbonate sedimentation in Indonesia and petroleum system of carbonate plays cases from Indonesia.
He presented petroleum system in general. Petroleum system is a natural system that encompasses a pod of active source rocks and all related oil and gas and which includes all the geologic elements (source, reservoir, seal, overburden rocks) and processes (trap formation, generation-migration-accumulation) that are essential if a hydrocarbon accumulation is to exist. The essential elements and processes must occur in time and space. For carbonate to be productive, we should exist in spatial and temporal fits with active petroleum system elements and processes.
After it, he explained about carbonate sedimentation in Indonesia and petroleum system of carbonate plays. Carbonates in Indonesia occur in ranges of ages and depositional settings. Productive carbonates of Indonesia have been in active petroleum system spatially and temporally. Producing carbonate reservoir in Indonesia range in ages from the Jurassic Manusela fratured oolitic carbonate in Seram Island, to the Pilocene globigerinid grainstones in the Madura Strait. Miocene reefs and reefal carbonate dominate productive carbonate reservoir of Indonesia. Petroleum system of carbonate plays cases from Indonesia are consist carbonate depositional facies South Sumatra Basin, carbonate build up of Forearc Sibolga Basin, carbonate reservoir of West Java Basin, carbonate reservoir of South Makassar Basin, carbonate build up of The Salawati Basin-West Papua and new carbonate opportunity of Frontier South Halmahera. Finally discussion about had begun.

Overall, this workshop activity is very helpful especially for the newbie of Geosciences students in understanding carbonate reservoir and petroleum system of carbonate plays cases from Indonesia in such fun way.
